Description
Trapped in the narrow space between night and dawn, she struggles. Fighting against the simple fact that the night is over and she cannot face the day.She fights the urge to use, she uses against her will. The shame of this struggle is the room she is trapped in with no escape.
‘I began this painting in active addiction. I had received distinctions six months before for my work and six months later, I failed. That’s addiction. Twenty one years later, in recovery from addiction and with a solo show approaching, I finished it. Adjusting composition and foreshortening, the story unfolded. She was me. This painting is a collaboration between my active addiction self and my recovery self. Such a work cannot be repeated. Going back into addiction is not an option.’ -Lucille Fernandes-Stangl
