“A young man in his twenties. An ambitious dreamer, a Portuguese migrant to the shores of Africa. My father. He carries with him the ideologies that he was raised with, at this time it is the 1950’s in post-war Europe. This painting is an enquiry to the deeper nature of a complex man. In the painting of this picture I was confronted by the weight of the ideas that I, as his daughter  had placed upon his shoulders of what it means to be a man and a father. It is the confIict of values and ideas between one generation and another. I painted this after his death. I realise, now, how heavy that must have been.”
